Phonics at SMAAA
Children begin their reading journey in our school with Read, Write Inc. phonics. We have been a Read, Write Inc. school for the past 12 years, which means our staff are highly experienced and skilled in the teaching of early reading.
Children in Reception, Year 1 and sometimes Year 2 have a phonics lesson every morning.
Children on phonics wil bring home a 'Book Bag Book' every week. This book is at exactly the right level for your child and contains sounds they already know and can read in words. Reading this book for 10 minutes each evening can really help your child to develop 'speedy reading' - where they blend words quickly in their head without needing to sound it out loud. We do ask that you spend these crucial 10 minutes per night practicing this skill with your child.
Mrs Ferguson leads phonics and is happy to help with any queries you hae regarding your child's early reading.
