Overview
Reading
Children from Nursery to Year 2 are taught Phonics using the Read, Write Inc. programme. From Reception, Read, Write Inc.is taught in groups where children work on sounds that are at the correct level. Assessments are carried out every half term to measure progress. They have a Speed Sounds lesson every day, where they learn a new sound and practice reading words containing sounds they already know. They also have a daily reading lesson using a wide variety of fiction and non fiction texts that are matched exactly to the sounds children know, allowing children to quickly build fluency and understanding.
When children have completed the Read, Write Inc. programme they are taught reading and comprehension using the Literacy Tree scheme. This scheme uses high quality texts to teach reading skills with a focus on inference, deduction, retrieval and interpretation.
Writing
At St Michael and All Angels we teach writing from Year 1 to Year 6 through the Literacy Tree scheme. Using high quality texts, each unit offers built in opportunities to explore writing genres and support grammar progression. Children work on two units per half term.
