Early Years

Early Years Lead-Mrs Fairhurst

Welcome to our Exciting Early Years.

We believe that " Education is a natural process carried out by the child and is not acquired by listening to words but by experiences in the environment"

Maria Montessori.

At St Michael and All Angels we offer 15 hr nursery provision during morning and afternoon sessions, we also offer a limited number of 30hr places,. We are a two form entry and have two reception classes.  The concept of our curriculum has been carefully planned  to ensure that there is progress from nursery to reception and feeds into the national curriculum, giving our children the best start to their early education.

The Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum has seven areas of learning and development. These are all related to each other; however they are divided into Prime and Specific Areas.

Prime Areas

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

  • Communication and Language

  • Physical Development

Specific Areas

  • Literacy

  • Mathematics

  • Understanding the World

  • Expressive Arts and Design

  • In addition the EYFS curriculum places importance on the way in which children learn, this is referred to as the characteristics of learning:

Playing and Exploring: Finding out and exploring, playing with what they know and being willing to ‘have a go’.

Active Learning: Being involved and concentrating, keeping on trying and enjoying achieving what they set out to do.

Creating and Thinking Critically: Having their own ideas, making links and choosing ways to do things.
